Raytheon will update radio systems on U.S. Army helicopters with the RT-1987, a software-defined radio that is part of the company’s SkyFire product line and features both cryptography tools and Mobile User Objective System support.
Raytheon said Sunday that it demonstrated the features of what the company says would be the first major upgrade of a radio system in nine years.
Scott Whatmough, vice president of integrated communications systems at Raytheon’s space and airborne systems segment, said the demonstration at Redstone Arsenal Engineering Lab in Alabama showcased RT-1987’s interoperability with legacy systems and its data sharing and security features.
The company added the system also uses Software Communication Architecture and supports waveforms such as the Soldier Radio Waveform, along with other radios in the SkyFire line.
