An International Maritime Organization subcommittee has endorsed the approval of Iridium‘s application to offer satellite communication services through the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.
The application is still subject to review by an independent expert panel before final approval by IMO’s maritime safety committee, Iridium said Monday.
“The overwhelming support for our application to provide the industry an alternative and equally capable option for GMDSS services is a testament to the value and benefit the Iridium network can provide to maritime safety,” said Matt Desch, CEO of Iridium.
Iridium partnered with maritime communications equipment manufacturers to build shipboard terminals that are designed to operate up to 20 years and help vessel operators transmit data and voice communications.
The company also intends to leverage its satcom constellation to extend GMDSS coverage to remote Polar regions.
