Lockheed Martin Flight Services has approved the use of DeLorme‘s inReach satellite communicators for support of the LMFS Adverse Condition Alerting Service and Surveillance-enhanced Search and Rescue services used by general aviation and military pilots.
Once an inReach device in enrolled in the free program, pilots submitting flight plans with LMFS can receive ACAS alerts of changed conditions after a pilot has been briefed and set a course, the companies said Monday.
With integrated GPS, location-tracking, SOS and two-way messaging features of inReach work to enable two-way communications to and from anywhere in the world over the Iridium satellite network, according to the companies.
“We are pleased to offer pilots an additional benefit by integrating DeLorme’s inReach devices into our Adverse Condition Alerting and Surveillance-Enhanced Search-and-Rescue services,” said Jim Derr, director of Lockheed Martin Flight Services.
“Inflight alerts for hazardous weather and TFRs, as well as the faster initiation of search-and-rescue procedures with a greatly reduced search area are a big win for pilots.”
Pilots can use their smartphone or tablet to view ACAS alerts and other messages, as well as DeLorme’s free Earthmate app for texting and access to unlimited topographic maps and NOAA charts, the companies said.
