Iridium Communications has unveiled a global satellite-based Wi-Fi hotspot service to provide mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets with voice and data connectivity beyond the coverage of terrestrial networks.
The company said Monday the Iridium GO! offering includes free applications for voice calls and texting and access to email, Web, weather and social media.
Bryan Hartin, executive vice president for sales and marketing at Iridium, said the product also works to help Android and iOS app developers to control access to the satellite network.
That feature comes alongside the supplementary software developers’ kit and offered programs for certification of third-party applications on the platform, Iridium says.
Iridium GO! is built to support up to five connected devices within an approximate 33-yard radius and features customizable global weather forecast and tracking applications, as well as an SOS service that connects directly to an emergency provider.
The company said the service can also be supported by the upcoming Iridium NEXT satellites to be launched in 2015.
