Google Signs Up 7 Tech Firms for ‘Kubernetes’ Community; Scott Guthrie Comments

Microsoft, Red Hat, IBM, Docker, Mesosphere, CoreOS and SaltStack have joined Google’s open source docker management community.

The companies will contribute code to the Kubernetes container management technology and maintain the project as an open container management framework for private, public and hybrid cloud applications, Google said Thursday.

Google says the Kubernetes community aims to help developers extract value from container technologies.

“Microsoft will help contribute code to Kubernetes to enable customers to easily manage containers that can run anywhere,” said Scott Guthrie, executive vice president of the cloud and enterprise group at Microsoft.

“Through this collaboration with Google on Kubernetes, we are contributing to the evolution of cloud computing and helping deliver the promises that container technologies offer to the open hybrid cloud,” said Paul Cormier, president of products and technologies at Red Hat.

Microsoft will introduce Kubernetes into the Azure virtual machine-based Linux environments and IBM will develop an open governance model by working with the community.

CoreOS, Mesosphere and SaltStack intend to incorporate the docker manager technology into their respective offerings.
