Bechtel‘s research partners from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and Los Alamos National Laboratory have received multiple 2014 R&D 100 Awards from R&D Magazine for their national security, energy and health technology inventions.
The awards recognize the year’s top 100 scientific and engineering technology products or inventions that also have commercial potential, Bechtel said Wednesday.
“The work of these dedicated men and women and their collaborators from industry exemplify the important contributions of U.S. national laboratories to the safety and security of this country and the world,” said Craig Albert, president of government services at Bechtel.
Livermore received four awards for the following:
- Miniaturized and portable thin-layer chromatography kit for monitoring of explosives or illicit substances;
- Superconducting tunnel junction X-ray spectrometer for more precise measurement of X-ray energies;
- Optical technology for defense and material processing; and
- Optical polishing method for improving the National Ignition Facility’s optics.
Meanwhile, Los Alamos was awarded for the following:
- Multiphase flow meter or Safire for measuring oil, natural gas and water flow in environmentally sensitive areas; and
- Acoustic wavenumber spectrometer for detecting structural defects using high-resolution and ultrasonic images.
These national laboratories are managed and operated by Bechtel’s partnerships with the University of California and other institutions.
