BAE Systems will contribute $1 million and other forms of support over the next five years to a research center in Adelaide, Australia that is partly funded by the country’s government and other contributions from the defense industry and academia.
Personnel at the $88 million Data to Decisions Cooperative Research Center will research and develop tools to help manage large amounts of data for Australia’s defense and national security sector, BAE said Monday.
The Data to Decisions CRC opened at the national headquarters with teams in Victoria and New South Wales.
“Big data comes from many sources at an alarming velocity, volume and variety, which makes it difficult to analyze using current technologies,” said Kim Scott, director of business development and land and integrated systems for BAE Systems Australia.
“Large amounts of text, images and audio are rapidly generated all the time through digital processes and social media.”
BAE wants to apply research work at the Data to Decisions CRC to the company’s work in data analytics, high-speed distribution and security for customers in the defense sector.
“Investing in the latest technology will be necessary to provide timely and accurate intelligence in the future.”
