Scientists and engineers at BAE Systems have revealed a series of aircraft technologies the company aims to have deployed by 2040.
The team is working on technologies ranging from 3D printers and self-healing vehicle parts, to long-range multi-stage aircraft and directed energy weapons that could search and destroy missiles at the speed of light.
said that the company’s experts offer valuable insight into ‘drawing board’ technologies currently under wraps.
“Of course we don’t know exactly what sorts of aircraft technologies will be used in 2040 with any certainty, but it’s great to be able to show the public some concepts that might be possible through projecting where today’s technology could get to,” said Nick Colosimo, a futurist and engineering Manager within the R&D team.
“BAE Systems has a rich heritage in research and development, and our team builds on literally decades of previous R&D work by thousands of scientists and engineers.”
BAE said that these four concepts are to be put into existence in animations in the days to come by military and other organizations in the hopes of predicting the future of aircraft engineering and how it might evolve.
