Lockheed Martin and China’s State Nuclear Power Automation System Engineering Company will collaborate to manufacture prototype protection systems for the country’s third-generation nuclear power plant reactors by using field programmable gate array technology.
The FPGA-based nuclear safety instrumentation and control platform will work to monitor and identify potential system failures and be part of a new deployment or an upgrade, Lockheed said June 12.
“We are committed to creating and implementing industry-specific solutions for civilian nuclear power plants, ensuring the safety of critical power generating infrastructure,” said Jim Gribschaw, Lockheed’s general manager of nuclear systems and solutions.
He said the company has been providing nuclear safety systems to customers for at least 55 years.
“We believe that the cooperation between SNPAS and Lockheed Martin will provide safer and more secure technical solutions and equipment for nuclear power plants worldwide,” said Qiu Shaoyang, SNPAS general manager.
The parties have provided the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and China’s National Nuclear Safety Administration with a licensing topical report for their digital nuclear safety instrumentation and control platform.
