General Dynamics’ SATCOM Technologies division has been awarded a contract to develop and install a radio-telescope antenna for a new observatory in Argentina.
The 100-ton, 40-foot, submillimeter-wavelength radio telescope antenna is intended for the Large Latin American Millimeter Array observatory located in the Atacama Desert, General Dynamics said Wednesday.
“These grand-scale scientific instruments, built by General Dynamics SATCOM Technologies, help scientists discover new information about the universe at a microscopic level,†said Chris Marzilli, president of General Dynamics C4 Systems.
The LLAMA project, a joint venture between Argentina and Brazil, is scheduled to operate in 2017 at a frequency of 90-to-700 gigahertz and will work with the ALMA observatory in the Atacama Desert.
General Dynamics SATCOM Technologies’ Duisburg, Germany-based VERTEX ANTENNENTECHNIK organization will build the LLAMA radio telescope antenna.
