Boeing has developed an electric satellite in an effort to help customers reduce launch costs, Daily Breeze reported Saturday.
Jordan England-Nelson writes that Boeing is set to complete two electric 702SP satellites in late 2014 for Asia Broadcast Satellite.
Boeing will then transport the commercial satellites to Cape Canaveral, Fla., where SpaceX will launch the spacecraft on the Falcon 9 rocket in 2015, according to the report.
Ken Betaharon, chief technology officer at Asia Broadcast Satellite, said the company spent between $175 million and $180 million for the development and launch preparation for the satellites.
Nelson writes progress of the electric satellites could help pave the way for development of higher-capacity spacecraft with less costs.
