BAE Systems has started work to add new weapons and avionics systems to South Korea’s fleet of F-16 fighter jets under a two-phase foreign military sales contract awarded by the U.S. Air Force.
The company said Wednesday it will supply equipment and parts such as mission computers, cockpit displays, radars and sensors for 134 KF-16C/D Block 52 aircraft, as well as training and logistics support.
Two F-16 aircraft are awaiting work at BAE’s Alliance Airport modification facility in Fort Worth, Texas.
“The arrival of the jets is a major milestone for our entire team and a historic occasion for both our company and the industry,” said John Bean, vice president and general manager of BAE’s global fighter programs.
Phase one of the contract underway and BAE is preparing for phase two that will include systems integration, flight tests, production then installation of upgrades.
BAE expects to have an estimated 150 job opportunities for the F-16 upgrade work in the coming months as the company is also set to use its facilities in California, Florida, New York and Virginia for support.
