As Verizon releases the 2014 Data Breach Investigations Report, NJVC Principal Robert Michalsky notes that 92 percent of the more than 100,000 breaches and security incidents covered in the past decade can be grouped within nine attack patterns.
Summarizing all of Verizon’s collected data since 2008 is expected to aid cybersecurity professionals implement smart risk management measures, Michalsky says Tuesday.
The report identifies the nine patterns as point-of-sale intrusions, physical theft/loss, card skimmers, web app attacks, miscellaneous errors, denial-of-service attacks, insider misuse, crimeware and cyber espionage, with DoS attacks as the leading pattern at 33 percent.
It also pinpoints the top attack patterns for specific industries, which companies can use to narrow the focus of their cyber defense efforts and align IT resources as needed, Michalsky writes.
He highlights tips from the report, noting the importance of a “preventative mindset” in dealing with cyber risks.
