IBMÂ has released a new suite of software-defined storage technology products for accessing and processing enterprise data in any form and from any source as the company aims to help businesses manage large volumes of data.
“Digital information is growing at such a rapid rate and in such dramatic volumes that traditional storage systems used to house and manage it will eventually run out of runway,” Tom Rosamilia, senior vice president of IBM’s systems and technology group, said Monday.
The new portfolio, developed by IBM Research Labs, includes Elastic Storage features that work to scale to increased data volumes and use the company’s global file system software.
According to IBM, Elastic Storage also includes policy-driven features and analytics to allot placement of data in storage, encryption and secure-erase features and support for open APIs and cloud management software.
IBM uses Elastic Storage in the Watson computer system, while the National Center for Atmospheric Research’s Computational and Information Services Laboratory stores and process large amounts of data with the Elastic Storage tool.
