SAP AG has partnered with the Stanford School of Medicine to analyze genetic and environmental risk factors associated with heart disease and other medical conditions by using SAP’s HANA in-memory computing platform.
The company has also joined the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health, a coalition of research organizations, medical providers and information technology companies that aim to develop standards for genomic data exchange, SAP said Wednesday.
“It is a big step for SAP to closely collaborate with the Stanford School of Medicine and join the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health to ultimately enable a better understanding of genetic underpinnings of health and disease,” said Barbara Stortz, senior vide president for HANA native development and HANA healthcare platform.
The nonprofit works to develop best practices and a common framework to help organizations secure and exchange genomic and clinical data, according to SAP.
SAP’s partnership with the university aims to help medical scientists understand variation in human genomes and develop personalized treatments.
Researchers used the HANA technology to analyze and verify results from a study of gene variants that have been associated with an increased risk for type 2 diabetes.
