The shipping and distribution industry is increasingly turning to cloud computing for use in business operations, Verizon‘s Maria Montenegro wrote in a blog post published Tuesday.
Montenegro, a communications manager at the company, said one of the drivers of cloud adoption in the industry is is the need for IT and software applications to manage cargo movement.
She discussed cloud computing in the shipping industry for the piece with John Edmunds, Verizon Terremark‘s cloud solutions managing director.
Edmunds said customer relationship management, enterprise resource planning and ship-to-shore data synchronization are additional applications for a shared data management product.
The report highlighted disaster recovery as a significant driver for cloud adoption, including onshore cloud storage to secure data despite potential business disruption from at-sea conditions and weather systems.
