Exelis has updated an aircraft tracking system used by the Federal Aviation Administration as the company and agency aim to help air traffic controllers transmit data to pilots.
The Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast technology was developed in 2007 to track the locations of airplanes by using GPS systems, Exelis said Monday.
“The completion of the ADS-B network is a landmark achievement for the FAA, Exelis and for the flying public,†said Pamela Drew, president of Exelis’ information systems business.
Drew added that the company worked as lead systems integrator for the project.
A total of 634 ground stations have been deployed across the U.S., Alaska, Guam and Hawaii while nearly a hundred service delivery points have been installed at FAA sites under the program.
The ADS-B system works to monitor airplanes and airport vehicles on runways.
