cybersecurityCybersecurity has taken a higher place on the agendas of federal chief information officers in 2014 against a backdrop of emerging technologies, threat landscapes and IT workforce rosters, the Washington Post reported Monday.

Derek Johnson of Deltek writes that a push from state and local governments to update their security was observed in the aftermath of a 2012 hack attack on North Carolina’s revenue department, which compromised tax information of potentially millions of users.

Johnson also cites the National Association of State Chief Information Officers, which ranks security, including risk assessment, data protection, training and awareness, insider threats, as number one on its priority strategies, management processes and solutions list.

Johnson writes increasing legislative coverage and a growing trend to migrate to the cloud to manage, manipulate and store data can also be factored into the growing awareness.
