at-t-logoFederal agencies have a wealth of data that could be mined using machine-to-machine technology to improve real-time decision making, but adoption rates have been slow, a new study from AT&T Government Solutions and the Government Business Council found.

Just 19 percent of 355 senior federal officials polled said their departments use or plan to use M2M, with cost and security identified as key concerns to implementation, GBC and AT&T announced.

The M2M technology platform seeks to automate tasks by employing meters, sensors and other wired and wireless devices to collect and transmit information such as how much energy is being used in a military base.

GBC Director Ted Iobst said applications now go beyond asset tracking and environment data collection, with a focus on infrastructure, environment, public and national safety.

“There is still a significant opportunity for this technology to improve decision making in federal agencies,” Iobst said.

“At a time when agencies are under increasing pressure to cut budgets and demonstrate accountability to Congress, it is more important than ever that they be able to keep track of mission critical assets,” he added.
