TCSlogoTeleCommunication Systems has established a technology laboratory for vendors to test if their telephony software and interfaces are capable of processing 911 emergency text messages.

TCS’ ESInet Interoperability Lab is scheduled to open in April and was built for testing of text-to-911 architectures prior to a system’s deployment at public safety answering points, TCS said Tuesday.

“The ability for PSAPs to accept and process SMS text messages from the public is crucial as the nation takes the next step toward Next Generation 9-1-1,” said Thomas Ginter, vice president of TCS’ safety and security group.

According to the company, vendors can access the lab remotely by using an online portal that is connected to a TCS facility in Seattle.

The NG9-1-1 project aims to help 911 operators receive and process citizens’ SMS-based emergency texts.
