Sterling Global Operations and Special Diving Services Holland will work together to execute salvage and minesweeping work on an Iraqi tanker ship that sunk off the coast of Kuwait during the 1991 Persian Gulf War.
SGO will deploy surface-supplied divers that will work to remove the wreckage of the sunken 82,000-ton Amuriyah crude carrier that is blocking a mooring construction project at Iraq’s offshore Al Basrah oil terminal, SGO said Thursday.
Surface-supplied diving operations use umbilical equipment to supply air and breathing gas from a surface vessel to divers.
“Our employees will work under the supervision of SDS Holland to ensure that no unexploded ordnance remains on the ship or in the close proximity of the mooring point,†said Matt Hulsey, vice president of programs for SGO.
The project is scheduled to be completed within 12 months or 18 months.
