Lockheed Martin has signed a contract to help design Atlantis Resources‘ AR1500 tidal turbine set for the MeyGen tidal stream project, which aims to leverage tidal energy as a commercial power source.
The 1.5-megawatt, single-rotor turbine will play a role in the Scotland-based MeyGen project that targets 100-percent renewable energy usage in the country by 2020,” Lockheed said Tuesday.
Other goals of the project include generating up to 398 megawatts of power, which Lockheed says is equivalent to the energy needed to power 200,000 homes.
Tim Fuhr, director of ocean energy for Lockheed’s mission systems and training unit, said the company aims to help the AR1500 use tidal energy to produce renewable energy for homes and businesses worldwide.
The Lockheed-Atlantis team also plans to deploy the AR1500 to Canada’s Bay of Fundy.
Both companies have formed an exclusive partnership in the global tidal power business to collaborate on technology, components and programs such as the Energy Technologies Institute TEC Demonstrator program.
