L3 logoL-3 Communications is working to extend mobile communications to frontline soldiers under a $15.5 million contract with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, Military & Aerospace Electronics reported Sunday.

John Keller writes the U.S. Army and Marine Corps warfighters will connect to a millimeter-wave communications backbone under the DARPA Mobile Hotspots program.

The company will work to build a gigabit-per-second tactical backbone network by leveraging air, mobile and fixed assets in order to extend the system to remote troops, according to the report.

The network is intended to transmit data across hotspots from intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance sources and command centers, the report says.

L3 will perform the work at various sites including Salt Lake City, North Hampton, Mass., and Fort Lee, N.J. through March 2015.
