satellite airforceExelis has partnered with GeoMetWatch to develop geostationary satellite sounding instruments that would retrieve atmospheric data for weather forecasting purposes.

GeoMetWatch’s partner organizations will host Exelis-made sensors on weather monitoring satellites through GeoMetWatch’s licensing agreement with the Commerce Department, GeoMetWatch said Wednesday.

The Commerce Department has granted GeoMetWatch a license to operate up to six hyperspectral sounders in geostationary orbit.

“We know the National Weather Service and meteorological agencies around the world want geo-sounding data and we believe a commercial approach could be the best way to provide it,” added Eric Webster, Exelis vice president and director of weather systems.

Exelis will design atmospheric sounding technology based on the company’s Advanced Baseline Imager platform, according to GeoMetWatch.
