IBM has built a lab prototype device that is designed to transfer big data between data centers and cloud computing environments, as well as built to increase Internet speeds. a technology that can also apply to Internet speeds.
IBM Research worked with Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne to develop an analog-to-digital converter for carrying data across fiber channels, the company said Thursday.
The older version of the technology was developed in partnership with Semtech and is currently licensed to the semiconductor supplier to build its communication platforms, IBM said.
Through its 32nm silicon-on-insulator process, IBM is manufacturing the 64 giga-samples-per-second microchips for Semtech.
IBM presented the latest ADC at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference in San Francisco through a paper published with EPFL entitled, “A 90GS/s 8b 667mW 64× Interleaved SAR ADC in 32nm Digital SOI CMOS.â€
The collaboration between IBM Research and EPFL sought to address the increasing Internet and big data traffic and the ADC is designed for Internet speeds of between 200 and 400 gigabits per second.
