Oracle has been selected to manage scientific data for Italian National Institute of Astrophysics’ space mission with the goal of developing a three-dimensional map of the Milky Way galaxy.
INAF will use the Oracle Database and Oracle Enterprise Manager to store and process information collected by the Gaia satellite, which the European Space Agency launched into space in December, Oracle said Wednesday.
“Our activity within the Gaia mission will provide a huge volume of information, a very precious heritage of astronomical data that will have to be stored for the whole 21st century and beyond,†said Roberto Morbidelli, scientific operation manager at INAF.
INAF and ALTEC (the Italian supplier of engineering and logistic services for the International Space Station) collaborated to develop a production and archiving infrastructure based on Oracle Database before the launch of Gaia mission.
Oracle Enterprise Manager was then used by third-party applications and systems to access the Gaia mission data within the Oracle Database.
