Microsoft Corp. has joined Facebook Inc.’s cloud initiative which aims to develop and share data center infrastructure designs, The Next Web reported Tuesday.
Citing a Microsoft blog article, Kaylene Hong writes the software company intends to contribute its cloud server specification for data center hardware to the Open Compute Project.
Bill Laing, Microsoft’s corporate vice president for cloud and enterprise, said the cloud server designs are intended to build new hardware technologies for cloud computing as part of Microsoft’s Cloud OS initiative to help clients achieve consistent information technology platforms.
Those servers are built to work around the Windows Azure cloud platform requirements, TNW reports.
Hong writes Microsoft Open Technologies is also committing its software code to managing hardware operations for the open source community.
