Lockheed Martin BlueLockheed Martin will manufacture cryogenic tanks in Louisiana by using technology originally intended to manufacture the Space Shuttle’s external tank in an effort to help meet liquefied natural gas demands.

The company will leverage that technology and other program services for propellant handling, test and integration, composites manufacturing, production and tooling design to build the LNG tanks, Lockheed said Friday.

Gerry Fasano, president of Lockheed’s information systems and global solutions-defense business, said the company intends for its entry into the LNG tank market to fulfill requirements of private sector customers.

“We look forward to a long term relationship with the State of Louisiana and the greater New Orleans area and to bringing quality employment opportunities to the community,” Fasano added.

The tanks will be built for applications such as land distribution, rail, waterway and land-based LNG storage.

Lockheed will produce the tanks based on the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ standards for pressurized storage and cryogenic materials transportation.
