Hughes Network Systems has achieved data transfer rates of more than 1 gigabit per second using its satellite broadband technology.
JUPITER is designed to support the HughesNet Gen4 Internet service, which has almost 700,000 U.S. subscribers, Hughes said Tuesday.
Adrian Morris, chief technology officer and executive vice president of engineering at Hughes, said the company aims to maximize throughput for very small aperture terminal networks.
Gen4 works to provide users with online speeds of 10 to 15 megabits per second and the service offers new features such as a voice over Internet Protocol call option, the company says.
