ITT Exelis has won a $15 million contract to produce composite tail rotor assemblies for Sikorsky‘s fleet of S-76D helicopters.
Exelis will manufacture structural components such as blades and laminated composite beams at its factory in Salt Lake City, the company said Thursday.
Mike Blair, vice president and general manager of Exelis’ aerostructures business, said composite materials are intended to help military and commercial aircraft become more fuel efficient.
Composite technology also is designed to help reduce both aircraft weight and noise impact, the company says.
The also makes components for Sikorsky’s S-76C commercial fleet and the U.S. Marine Corps‘ CH-53K heavy lift chopper.
