StrongbridgeLogoThe Department of Housing and Urban Development aims for its geocoding service center to help match addresses on an enterprise level as well as verify geographic data, according to the Federal IT Dashboard.

HUD says geocoding involves deriving associated geographic coordinates from data such as street addresses and ZIP codes, or aggregating data into a Census statistical unit of geography such as a Census tract.

Strongbridge Corp. signed a contract option with HUD March 22 to continue helping the department run its GSC and provide operations and maintenance support to the center.

The company won options in 2012 to operate the GSC and each individual award was signed in the months of September, April and February.

One example of HUD’s geocoding efforts occurs in its Multifamily Housing program, which contains layers of data outside of street addresses and other widely-known types of information.

The geocodes for this program include interpolated rooftops, different types of zip codes such as ZIP+2 and ZIP+4 and Census Tracts.

In some cases, the address may not code and that information would be categorized as “null.”
