Battelle has named Department of Energy electrical engineer Gianluigi De Geronimo this year’s Inventor of the Year for his microelectronics designs used in national security tools and medical imaging, according to a Azom.com article.
De Geronimo leads a five-electrical engineer team at the DoE“™s Brookhaven Lab“™s Instrumentation Division and designs application specific integrated circuits used for science experiments.
Some of De Geronimo“™s inventions include a prostate cancer identification camera, artwork and materials specific elements detection and mapper, and other designs used to upgrade ATLAS detector equipment and the Large Hadron Collider in Europe.
The inventor was presented with the award during an April 19 awards ceremony in Columbus, Ohio.
Azom.com reports that De Geronimo is currently working on a DoE Office of Science’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency-funded experiment to design ASICs for “elusive particles called neutrinos that could help determine how the universe evolved after the Big Bang and why there is more matter than antimatter.”
