U.S. national laboratories operate five out of the 20 fastest supercomputers in the world, Information Week reports.
Citing a survey from Top500.org, Patience Wait writes Oak Ridge National Laboratory“™s Titan supercomputer takes the top spot in this year“™s list.
Titan is used for nuclear power research and development of materials used for manufacturing and modeling fuels.
Other U.S supercomputers in the list include Argonne’s Mira, Los Alamos and Sandia’s Cielo, and Lawrence Berkeley’s Hopper.
Wait writes researchers are demonstrating supercomputer technology at the SC12 conference in Salt Lake City this week, where they reported being able to forecast the trajectory of a power grid and plot status changes.
Researchers from Pacific Northwest National Lab, Argonne, Iowa State University and Canadian firm Opal-RT aimed to develop the simulation for predicting changes before they happen, Wait reports.
