Northrop Grumman senior leaders visited land around an Air Force base last week to examine the possibility of a new drone technology complex that could help produce the company’s Global Hawk drone.

Sen. John Hoeven’s said the senator and the Northrop executive team traveled to Grand Forks, N.D., a region Hoeven wants to eventually become a testing ground for unmanned aerial systems in civilian airspace.

The Base Realignment Impact Committee envisions Northrop as an anchor tenant for a future complex, according to the report.

“Combined with our efforts to establish Grand Forks as one of six national UAS pilot test sites for integration of UAS into the National Airspace, Northrop Grumman's presence would be a great asset,” Hoeven said in the report.

Grand Forks County is proposing to lease 200 acres from Grand Forks Air Force Base to be used for UAS activities, according to the release.
