IBM is entering phase three of a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency program to develop intelligent machines, the Defense Department announced Tuesday.
The company won a $11,986,879 contract modification to move forward on hardware, perception and simulation for the Systems of Neuromorphic Adaptive Plastic Scalable Electronics program.
According to the Pentagon, this new phase of the program aims to address risks with with scaling neurocomputational systems based on the TrueNorth chip and architecture.
The initial phase of SyNAPSE involved development of nanometer-scale electronic synaptic components that adapt connection strength between two neurons in similar manner to that of other biological systems.
DARPA wants the SyNAPSE program to result in designing of tools and computer simulations of the neuromorphic electronic systems to inform the designers, validate hardware prior to fabrication and provide virtual environments for training and testing simulated and hardware neuromorphic systems.
