Unisys has completed its transition of 5,000 personnel at the Energy Department‘s Idaho National Laboratory to a Google cloud-based email and collaboration platform, Unisys announced Wednesday.

Battelle Energy Alliance, DOE’s management and operations contractor for the lab, awarded Unisys the contract in August 2011 to implement Google Apps for Government.

Anthony Hess, group vice president for civilian agencies at Unisys’ federal systems unit, said other organizations in DOE and the federal government can look to this project as an example for cloud transitions.

The company recently helped the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration move 2,500 users to a Google cloud and also helped the General Services Administration move all of the agency’s users to the same platform.

Employees will use the new system to share information technology infrastructure, resources and applications.

Covers emerging companies in Washington’s government contracting sector.
