The Defense Information Systems Agency plans to issue a request for proposals for a secure enterprise wireless system by Sept. 30, Nextgov reports.

According to Bob Brewin’s story, DISA wants a contractor to develop, test and help operate the system, which would include smartphones, tablet computers and an application store.

DISA hopes to have 25,000 mobile terminals in the contract’s first year and then add 50,000 more annually for an unspecified number of years, Brewin reports.

The selected contractor will be required to continuously assess potential security risks at foreign-owned companies and factories and in the device hardware’s software code to mitigate security problem.

Brewin reports those problems include malware and logic bombs.

The agency is reportedly designing the application store to send applications to devices through the enterprise management system and support developers and users who search for, download and update mobile apps.

In June, DISA met with contractors at Mitre Corp.’s Annapolis Junction, Md. headquarters to discuss best practices for securing and managing mobile devices as well as the app store.
