ITT Exelis has entered a partnership with Sierra Nevada Corporation to develop an airborne wide-area persistent surveillance system that will aim to provide real-time motion imagery, Exelis announced Sunday.
The companies will market the system for domestic support of ground operations and could offer visible and infrared coverage of city-sized areas, according to the announcement.
S. Danny Rajan, director of emerging and airborne offerings at ITT Exelis Geospatial Systems, said Vigilant Stare will collect, process and distribute intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance data across multiple platforms.
A Twin Otter aircraft will host the Vigilant Stare system, which will be derived from an operational U.S. Air Force system.
The companies will offer the system on a fee-for-service basis in an attempt to reduce upfront costs and risk, according to the announcement.
Sierra Nevada is an electronic systems and integration firm based in Nevada that employs more than 2,100 people at 31 locations across 16 states.
