Boeing will upgrade training software for U.S. Navy maritime surveillance planes, the Defense Department announced Wednesday.

The company will provide the branch with block 9.2 software upgrades for a operational flight trainer, weapons tactics trainer and task trainer.

These upgrades will occur under lot one of low rate initial production for the P-8 Poseidon, a multi-mission maritime surveillance plane.

Boeing holds a $1.7 billion contract for low rate initial production of seven Poseidons, used for anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

The Navy will also receive a mission system desktop trainer.

Eighty-five percent of work will occur in St. Louis, Mo., with the rest occurring in Seattle and Anaheim, Calif through May 2013.
