China and the U.S. have agreed to collaborate in cyber space in an attempt to avoid avoid any future crises, BBC reports.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Chinese defense leader Liang Guanglie met Monday in Washington to discuss territorial disputes in the South China Sea, arms sales to Taiwan, North Korea’s nuclear program and cybersecurity.
China has been blamed for allegedly conducting directed cyber attacks against the U.S.
Liang denied that China was the main source of cyber attacks against the U.S., the report said.
Panetta also indicated there were other countries involved in the cyber attacks than China.
Since both the U.S. and China have technological capabilities in cyberspace, Panetta said the two countries should work together to avoid any actions that could lead to a crisis.
U.S. intelligence agencies issued a report last year indicating Chinese hackers had been stealing sensitive U.S. information for economic purposes, the report notes.
Chinese officials have repeatedly refuted such claims.
NATO officials recently accepted a friend request from a fake Facebook account that was allegedly used to collect information on top military officials.
China was largely pointed to as the culprit, while Northrop Grumman called China the biggest threat to U.S. cyber infrastructure security.
