Raytheon“™s BBN Technologies subsidiary will develop a metaphor technology tool for the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, Raytheon announced Monday.
The research arm of the intelligence community awarded BBN $2.5 million in funds to develop the metaphorical language analysis system.
The system will analyze native languages in an attempt to understand cultural beliefs, said Prem Natarajan, BBN’s head of speech and language processing.
BBN will develop tools and techniques for identifying, qualifying and categorizing metaphors and will build a metaphor repository to identify and link metaphors.
In October, the Defense Department announced BBN as the recipient of a contract to create technology that can translate multiple foreign languages in all genres.
