Customs and Border Protection agency is looking for a company that can melt or shred the agency’s extra or outdated electronic gadgets, Nextgov’s Allya Sternstein reports.
According to a May 8 solicitation, CBP said it is considering using a vendor who can recycle metal and plastic waste.
Hard drives or any other technology component with sensitive data would still be destroyed.
Sternstein notes the vendor will not be paid to dispose of the older electronic equipment and cannot redistribute the devices for national security purposes.
CBP expects to have mobile radios, antennas, speakers, batteries, remote communication consoles, cables, cell phones, network hubs, among other devices it needs to dispose of, according to the solicitation.
Department of Homeland Security sub-agencies and CBP will receive upgraded communications technologies through a $3 billion contract.
The agency currently disposes of dysfunctional radios in landfills when they are deemed irreparable.
CBP does not know how many devices it will need to dispose of but will use the solicitation in order to explore alternate options for disposing of government waste.
