Northrop Laser Defense System Moves Up a Grade on Govt Measurement - top government contractors - best government contracting eventNorthrop Grumman Corp.’s laser defense system technology has reached the sixth level of a nine-level government measurement system, the company announced Monday.

The All Semiconductor Airborne Laser Threat Terminator system went through a series of thermal, vibration, shock and field tests.

The system also had to meet a set of performance benchmarks.

Gordon Stewart, laser systems vice president and general manager, said that the system would support flight-testing.

Stewart added that the company will integrate the system into the next generation of aircraft-deployed countermeasure systems.

The laser-based technology is designed to protect different types of aircraft over sea or land, including fixed-wing and rotor aircraft, the company said.

The laser systems unit has delivered more than 25,000 electro-optic laser systems units and similar targeting systems, according to Northrop.

The company is responsible for additional technologies and contracts for unmanned aerial vehicles.

The company was reportedly working to develop a nuclear-powered drone with Sandia National Laboratories, a government-owned nuclear research lab.
