General Dynamics’ Bath Iron Works subsidiary is developing a multi-mission destroyer warship for the U.S. Navy that could launch rocket-propelled warheads that can shoot as far as 100 miles, Armed with Science reports.
The shipbuilding subsidiary is developing Zumwalt class destroyers to interoperate with the Naval fleet and conduct land or maritime attacks, the report said.
That new line of ships relies on automated systems, making for a larger ship with a smaller crew, and include human systems integration.
DDG 1000 also includes ship control and damage control automation, ship-wide command and control system, enhanced radar capabilities and high power output, which the company says could support electromagnetic railgun.
Adm. Jonathan Greenert, chief of naval operations, said the Zumwalt class fits the Navy’s Defense Strategic Guidance with its sonar system, strike capability and lower manning requirements.
The firm expects to deliver the DDG 1002 destroyer to the Navy by 2018.
