Thales and Siemens won an estimated $60 million contract to establish a test track facility for New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The companies said on Tuesday they will create a communications-based train control facility for the MTA’s transit system under the four-year contract.

The test facility will be installed on the Culver line of the subway system and will provide a controlled environment to test the control facility and its related equipment.

Thales USA President and CEO Allan Cameron said the track will serve as a validation and risk mitigation tool.

The CBTC technology controls all train movements and signaling in an attempt to reduce headway required between trains.

The companies will provide MTA a set of applications that could be used as a standard to direct future use and projects for test track facilities.

Siemens is also part of a contracting team with Boeing, working to deliver energy management and infrastructure solutions to the Defense Department.
