Technology will enable agencies to continue executing their critical functions amidst budget cuts, according to Defense Department Chief Information Officer Teri Takai.
Takai told ACT-IAC Excellence.gov awards attendees Tuesday that agencies should use technology the right way in order to survive the recent federal budget cuts, Federal Computer Week reports.
Innovation and technology are areas where agencies can make a difference in enhancing customer service and inter-agency capabilities, Takai said.
Takai, CIO position since November 2010, suggests agencies should use technology correctly in order to create a more agile and technologically competent entity.
Takai said her challenge and top priority at the Pentagon is consolidating purchased information technology assets to create an integrated front as it faces increasing cybersecurity threats.
According to Takai, it is necessary that agencies convince people to use a service and look at themselves as an enterprise and not 722 data centers.
Takai suggests agencies should be persistent in attempts to use the technology they have, keep their ideas simple by thinking outside of individual departments and have a champion for the cause.
