Northrop Grumman activated a satellite instrument that produces detailed images of Earth’s temperature, Northrop announced Wednesday.
The Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System launched aboard NASA“™s Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite, part of the Earth Observing System.
CERES instruments are broadband radiometers that measure the amount of reflected sunlight and thermal energy emitted by the Earth and its atmosphere.
NASA then uses the data to monitor the planet“™s temperature and calculate how clouds are effecting planetary heating or cooling.
CERES instruments monitor the Earth“™s radiation budget, the amount of solar energy in the atmosphere.
This is the sixth CERES instrument to be launched on a NASA platform.
NASA launched the first CERES instrument in 1997 aboard the Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission.
CERES is also present on the TERRA, EOS and AQUA platforms.
