The Department of Homeland Security is looking to tap the private sector for an interoperable radio communications network, DHS Chief Information Officer Richard Spires told Federal News Radio.

Spires said DHS has discussed the project with other agencies and has established a joint program to initiate the effort.

The new system would use commercial 4G networks to connect federal, state and local law enforcement agencies.

Agriculture Department CIO Chris Smith told Federal News Radio agencies have many opportunities to share IT services and sharing is becoming a more logical and viable ideal.

Spires said the government has yet work out all of the kinks of establishing an interoperable network despite spending millions to develop such a network.

Federal agencies have until March 1 to decide the IT services they wish to share through a single service provider, according to the 2013 IT budget passback guidance.
