ATK has been selected by the Army to develop an alternative warhead for the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System, ATK announced Monday.
Lockheed Martin is the prime contractor for the GMLRS program.
ATK was selected among three competitors and will be a subcontractor to Lockheed.
The company said it was selected by the Army for meeting performance requirements with its alternative warhead featuring lethality enhanced ordnance design.
The GMLRS warhead will replace the existing Dual-Purpose Improved Conventional Munition warhead and removes use of submunitions.
Dave Wise, ATK’s defense components vice president and general manager, said ATK will adapt the design for missile, mortar, artillery and air-dropped weapon applications.
ATK will produce the alternative warhead at its Allegany ballistics laboratory in Rocket Center, W.Va.
The company will provide engineering and program support from its Plymouth, Minn. facility.
