According to a recent poll, more than half of Americans believe the United States should authorize cyber attacks against other countries when necessary.

60 Minutes and Vanity Fair questioned 1,045 Americans for their August poll and found not only was the majority aware of the current extent of cyber warfare, but it also supported the government’s use of it in ensuring national security. Of the others questioned, 27 percent opposed its use, while 17 percent said they simply did not know.

With more revelations from the Defense Department and other agencies about the theft of important and sensitive material, it seems not only justified but urgent that America finds a way to identify and protect everyone from these thieves, stated the poll.

Recently, cyber crime has received greater international notoriety following the reports of hacking incidents at large companies such as Lockheed Martin, Booz Allen Hamilton, ManTech International, AT&T and PayPal, as well as government agencies such as NATO and the CIA.

It is possible that because of these incidents, Americans are becoming more aware of cyber warfare and its threat to national security.
